In developing Twitter for Educators: A Professional Development Workshop, I explored the role of social media in schools. From the new literacies perspective, I examined how utilizing social media can enable teachers to embrace the ever-changing notion of literacy in our society today. Through using Twitter, a micro-blogging social networking application, teachers can interact and collaborate with students, parents, community members, and colleagues in ways never before possible. Social networking for classroom application enables students to share experiences and learn from each other in an online environment. By incorporating collaborative, multimodal online tools such as Twitter in their instruction, teachers are recognizing the literacy practices that students participate in outside of school. My professional development workshop is designed to introduce educators to Twitter so that they can start thinking about how schools and teachers can incorporate social media in ways that will further enhance learning.
